With the New Year comes a new tax, the Withholding Tax on Interest (WTI).

Historically Section 10(1)(h) of the Income Tax Act No 58 of 1962 (the Act) provided that interest income received by a non-residents of South Africa was exempt from taxation. This section was later amended to exempt interest paid to a non-resident of South Africa, except in the circumstance where it was paid to a natural person physically present in South Africa for a period exceeding 183 days or to a person who at any point in time carried on a business through a permanent establishment in South Africa.
